A Holiday to Remember

One of the greatest Thanksgiving holidays I had happened many years ago when I moved out of my ex- in-laws (my husband had passed away) and into my a 1-bedroom studio apartment with just 16 pillows and a toaster oven! I spent it alone on the floor, just me and Jesus!

That might sound crazy but let me tell you, it was peaceful and quiet and serene and for the first time in a long time, I was happy. I was still grieving my husband's passing but being around toxic people for a year had taken its toll on my nerves and I needed to do something to gain my sanity back.

Holidays are usually (or at least I thought so) a wonderful time to spend with family and friends. But at that time, my own family was thousands of miles away and I couldn't get their to see them. And I thought my husband's family was my family too. It turned out differently. And, that's kind of my reason for writing this post, not to bash anyone, but to say that if your life is full of turmoil, look to the source of it. If it's something you can't avoid, then I totally get that. If it is, remove it from your life.

In my case, I moved away physically and pulled away emotionally too. Someone told me after my husband had died that I didn't owe his family anything. At the time, I couldn't see that so I stayed. I wish I had listened to that advice and acted upon it. But it's okay, all turned out well and years later, I would meet my 2nd husband.

This Thanksgiving was spent with my hubby and with the pandemic going around, I knew I wouldn't be seeing anyone else but again it was okay, it reminded me of that day when I was on the floor with those 16 pillows. I had peace. Peace is not something I take lightly and you shouldn't either.

God said if our minds are stayed on Him, He would give us perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3) and in Philippians 4:6,7, He says: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

If there's ways of minimizing stress from our lives, I believe it's important to do that. Sometimes we can't avoid all situations, but as much as we can we should. Mental health is very important so that we can be at our best because there is much to pray for.
